The City of Sarnia’s Economic Development team is extending its congratulations to UTLX/PROX as the organization celebrates the completion of a significant expansion at its Procor Sarnia railcar repair facility.
Since the initial project charter was established in 2021, the railcar leasing and repair company has been working on planning and constructing a multi-million-dollar, 60,000 square foot capital improvement for its Sarnia repair facility, which first opened in 1986.
Plant Manager Sam Bagheri explained the addition of work bays for interior and exterior blast, paint, and welding/repairs, alongside anew transfer table for moving railcars, has transformed the site into a “one-stop” shop for maintaining railcars in accordance with Transport Canada, US DOT, and AAR rules and regulation for safe transport on the railroads. With Sarnia’s central location and proximity to the US border, expansion of this site was critical to supporting commerce and the various supply chains served by rail.
“Sarnia is a key rail corridor for North American rail freight”, said Bagheri, pointing out the site’s long history in the community and established local connections including CN Rail who switch railcars to and from this AAR certified repair facility.
With this expansion, Procor Sarnia has increased its capacity from 125 to 175 railcars. This will also require an expansion of the current workforce from some 120 employees up to a total of 150 employees by the end of this year.
